The Vybekat is back! Inspired by the music of Chicago, Vybekat fuses various genres of music within the Black American tradition, most notably "juke-house-jazz". Led by vibraphonist Thaddeus Tukes, the grooves of the Vybekat feel like a Chicago house party. The evening will feature performances from Chicago’s Own rapper Toine Houston and vocalist Candace Tukes.

Named a 2024 Downbeat Magazine “Rising Star”, composer and percussionist Thaddeus Tukes honors the legacy of the vibraphone within the jazz tradition and beyond. Presented as the "World's best vibraphonist" by World Expo 2020 in Dubai, his virtuosity and creativity "brings poetry to the vibraphone" (Chicago Tribune, 2019), which has captivated audiences around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York City, Symphony Center in Chicago, and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. As one of “Chicago’s Hidden Gems” (CBS, 2023), Thaddeus is the most in-demand vibraphonist from the city of Chicago.

Chicago native, Antoinette Houston, a.k.a. Toiné (/ Tow – Na /), is an American Entertainment Artist who is rapidly changing the game for MCs in the Hip-Hop Soul arena. Toiné offers a variety of talents in addition to rapping, ranging from lyrical storytelling and creative writing to performance art and acting (VO and commercial). Formed in 2021 our of a series of concerts at the Katalyst Gallery, THE KATALYST COVERSATION brings together the talents fo four of the finest musicians working in Chicago.

ARI BROWN is an internationally recognized tenor saxophonist, pianist, composer, arranger, and teacher. He began as a pianist, playing for soul, blues, and R&B artists around the midwest (Gene Chandler, the Chi-Lites, B.B. King, Lou Rawls, Chuck Berry, the Four Tops), and in 1965 he switched to tenor saxophone. He attended Woodrow Wilson College where he met Jack DeJohnette and other founders/early members of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians: Henry Threadgill, Roscoe Mitchell, Muhal Richard Abrams, and Joseph Jarman. He joined the AACM in 1971 and was enlisted by the Awakening (which included AACM affiliates) for its two groundbreaking albums in 1972 and ‘73. He played sax later in the 1970s with McCoy Tyner, Don Patterson, and Sonny Stitt. His resumé is vast, but highlights include the AACM Experimental Orchestra, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, The Ari Brown Quintet, Lester Bowie, Anthony Braxton, Donald Byrd, Malachi Favors, Von Freeman, Roscoe Mitchell, David Murray, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Kahil El’Zabar's Ritual Trio.

VINCENT DAVIS is an internationally acclaimed jazz percussionist, composer, and teacher. He met Roscoe Mitchell in 1985, became a touring musician, and has since been working with Mitchell for 40 years. Other artists Davis has collaborated with include Matthew Ship, Buddy Montgomery, Ken Chaney, Earl Thompson, Art Porter, David Murry, Gerald Cannon, Tatsu Aoki, Harrison Bankhead, Kirk Brown, Malachi Thompson, Corey Wilkes, Junius Paul and a host of others. Davis is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM).

ED WILKERSON is an internationally recognized American jazz composer, arranger, musician, and educator based in Chicago. As founder and director of the innovative octet, 8 Bold Souls, and the 25-member performance ensemble Shadow Vignettes, Wilkerson has toured festivals and concert halls throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, and the Middle East. He has also been a major presence in Chicago's Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), teaching composition at the organization's music school and serving for a time as AACM president. He was an original member of the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble (formed by percussionist Kahil El'Zabar upon El'Zabar's 1976 graduation from the AACM school) and remained with the group until 1997. Wilkerson has also played with the AACM Big Band, Roscoe Mitchell, Douglas Ewart, the Temptations, Chico Freeman, Geri Allen, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Muhal Richard Abrams, Aretha Franklin, and George Lewis.

PREYAS ROY is an accomplished, up and coming vibraphonist and marimba player. He came to Chicago to study at the University of Chicago, and soon after met his mentor, Sam Williams. Williams introduced Roy to street performing, and Roy soon became immersed in that improvisational space. He first played with Vincent Davis in 2011, performing a tribute to the late, great Baba Fred Anderson. Their ongoing weekly sessions began days later, and over the years, have included spectacular improvisors in Chicago's creative and experimental music scene. Musicians he has worked with include Hanah Jon Taylor, Scott Hesse, Junius Paul, Ben Schmidt-Swarz, Andrew Lawrence, Darius Savage, and others.

"Dre is a once-in-a-lifetime vocal talent, and Russ and I are so inspired and grateful to play a role in sharing his gifts with the world," Ciara says.

Ethnic Heritage Ensemble kick off their 2025 tour LIVE at The Promontory!

ALEX HARDING - SAXOPHONE

“I KNEW IN MY HEART THAT THIS BAND WOULD ENDURE”

EHE was formed in 1974 shortly after Sir Kahil EI’Zabar graduated from Lake Forest College, with the goal, “To combine concepts of African American music with its earlier roots in traditional African music, to produce new motifs and sounds true to their origins yet firmly pointed in a new artistic direction of enlightenment and deep listening.” Half a century later and the rich, compelling ever-evolving sound they are known for is still going strong, Together with the Art Ensemble of Chicago, the Ethic Heritage Ensemble is one of the two remaining original groups active in the world today that were nurtured in the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians).

El ‘Zabar attests, “my concept was based in logic as it pertains to the history of Great Black Music.

In other words, the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble has a strong rhythmic foundation, innovative harmonics and counterpoint, well-balanced interplay and polyphony among the players for highly developed ensemble dynamics. They are strong individual soloists with an in-depth grasp of music history, originality, fearlessness, and deep spirituality. Alongside multifaceted El’Zabar, the EHE's current line-up includes Corey Wilkes an trumpet (who has worked with numerous jazz masters, including Wynton Marsalis, Kurt Elling), and multi-instrumentalist Alex Harding on baritone sax (who has performed with Dollar Brand, Julius Hemphill, Sun Ra, and Fela The Musical). They whip up an electrifying mix of spiritual jazz and African rhythns built around fundamental brass improvisations and a swing-induced groove.

The resulting trance-like fervor, transports one into a mind-opening journey of spiritually enlightened deep listening.
